My degree in the Humanities prepared me for my career as a Sales Representative because I learned how to effectively communicate with people of all different backgrounds. During my time in college pursing this degree, I often had to collaborate with many students who I did not know prior. Learning to build relationships with people has greatly helped me in my current career. Each day at work, I conduct cold outreach in hopes of gaining potentials clients trust in the hopes of making a sale. Upon my graduation in of May 2023, I have been working at a talent agency, called Underscore Talent Management. Underscore Talent focuses on digital talent, otherwise known as influencers/creators online.

When I switched my Major over to Humanities, I was incredibly lost with what I wanted to pursue in the not so distant future. After taking classes from Stephanie Springer, I learned that it was okay not to have it all figured out! The job search is much like dating… you have to find what’s a good fit, and what isn’t. I was instructed to write down some of the talents I knew I had naturally, and some of the things I enjoyed doing. After that, I was able to narrow down some career paths I thought I would do well in. When it came to scoring initial interviews, persistence was key. (Especially in this job market.) Not every job will be the perfect fit, but it’s always one step closer to where you’re meant to be. I truly believe you don’t have to be the smartest person in the room, but you need to be willing to work the hardest. Use the skill set taught in your career prep classes and connect with as many people as possible. That will help tremendously along the way!

My education in the Humanities has better prepared me for my professional career than I could have ever imagined. I graduated with an emphasis in fashion but ultimately decided to pivot during the COVID-19 pandemic, returned to my first passion, politics, and ultimately decided to attend law school. The skills I learned in the College of Humanities and the connections I made through the school enabled me to pivot and succeed in the California State Legislature, as a student at McGeorge School of Law, and now in my new position at CJAC. The best advice I have for current students is to take Stephanie Springer's pre-internship course and immerse yourself in all of the knowledge she has to offer, as my experience in that course made me a better student and gave me the confidence to apply for any job, change jobs if necessary, and take on challenges to help my professional growth. I served as one of the youngest Communications Directors to a California State Assemblyman before moving to CJAC. The College of Humanities set me up to take chances and have this upward trajectory as a young professional.

Applied Humanities (Business Administration)
2021

My degree in Applied Humanities: Emphasis in Business Administration has helped not only prepare me for my professional career, but also life outside of college. The biggest takeaways for me that I apply everyday is the people aspect of business and to be resilient in life.

While taking courses for my major, resiliency was something that I heard a lot, especially in my capstone, pre-internship, and internship courses. I wasn't quite sure how to apply resiliency to my life in college besides making sure I turned my assignments in on time. However, once I graduated, I really wasn't sure of which direction to go.

I knew I had a passion for sports, but I was mainly focused on securing a job in the corporate world. After submitting countless applications and going through plenty of interviews, I finally secured a job with a Fortune 200 company as an outside sales rep. Shortly after starting in my new position, I quickly realized that it wasn't for me and I wasn't sure which direction to go. After finding the courage to leave that job, I found myself working two jobs and feeling even more dissatisfied. One day In between shifts, I received a call from the Owner of the Tucson Sugar Skulls Indoor Football Team.

Having interned during their 2021 season, thanks to my coursework and guidance from Stephanie Springer, I was invited to interview for an entry-level ticket sales position. My initial sales approach was to persuade people to buy tickets, but a shift occurred. Drawing on my Humanities education, I grasped that sales, like business, centers on people and communication. Genuine interactions, not force-fed information, became my focus.

Reflecting on conversations with College of Humanities professors and self-assessment assignments from Dr. Panferov-Reese, I discovered success in authenticity. By being myself and cultivating meaningful connections. The College of Humanities has helped shaped my approach, emphasizing value, genuine communication and connections.
